Foreign Minister Winston Peters has welcomed the announcement of the first phase of the US-brokered peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, describing it as a long-awaited breakthrough after years of devastating conflict.
“Over the past two years, both Israelis and Palestinians have suffered immensely,” Mr Peters said. “Today is a positive first step in bringing that suffering to an end.”
He praised the efforts of the key mediators — the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye — for helping broker the deal. “We said in New York two weeks ago that countries with leverage over the situation needed to step up and show leadership. We commend them for doing just that,” he added.
Peters reiterated New Zealand’s longstanding position calling for the release of all hostages and an immediate ceasefire. “Hamas needs to release all of the hostages and Israel must withdraw their troops to the agreed-upon line,” he said. “This is an essential first step towards achieving lasting peace.”
The Foreign Minister also urged both parties to continue working towards a complete resolution, saying the world would be watching to ensure promises were kept.
Reflecting on domestic reactions, Peters pointed to widespread protests in New Zealand over the past two years and called for unity in supporting the peace initiative. “We look forward to all those protestors, and their political allies in Parliament, joining the Government today in applauding the deal that has been struck,” he said.

Muted applause. Nothing has happened yet and this could’ve happened ( hostage release) 22- 23 months ago, without 80% destruction of Gaza.

Peace agreement or ceasefire – a lasting peace?
After all that has happened been said and intent stated
Whether in fact Hamas decides to disarm remains to be seen
Which is part of the agreed truce but not yet finalized
Which raises doubts as to whether in fact this truce will solidify
Or wilt on the vine like other failed peace initiatives have done
Usually broken by the same main protagonists
It being entirely dependent on whether in fact the Jews are serious about and genuinely wanting peace
Have suffered immensely?
Winnie apologist on the fence again
You’d think with all the lawyers in the Beehive they’d be able to identify the completely illegal nature of Israel’s terrorist acts in Palestine. Why is Israel not held to account? Why do people like Winston Peters facilitate their criminal activity? How much longer does Palestine have to pay the cost of Hitler’s alleged war crimes?
If you’re interested in learning why Hamas does not have any “hostages”, and the extent of Israel’s criminality this Swiss intelligence Colonel Jaques Baud interview is worth the time it takes to watch it.
