Petraeus warns US against ‘high-risk’ ground mission in Iran

A former US Central Command chief has cautioned Washington against launching a ground operation in Iran to seize enriched uranium, describing such a move as highly dangerous and complex.

Retired General David Petraeus said the idea would carry significant risks, including potentially heavy casualties, and would be difficult to execute given uncertainty over the location of Iran’s uranium stockpiles.

Speaking to Fox News as a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran nears its expiry, Petraeus dismissed the notion that targeting more Iranian leaders would resolve the broader conflict, arguing it would not bring a lasting end to tensions. He noted that while US military action has inflicted damage, Iran remains resilient and is still weighing its negotiating position.

The warning comes amid statements from Donald Trump that an extension to the ceasefire is unlikely, alongside plans to maintain a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Petraeus said economic pressure has not pushed Iran to a breaking point, suggesting both sides remain short of desperation.

He added that neither Washington nor Tehran appears eager to return to full-scale conflict, citing infrastructure damage across the Gulf and mounting economic strain on both countries during weeks of hostilities. Fresh diplomatic efforts are expected, with JD Vance and other officials heading to Pakistan for potential talks, though uncertainty remains over whether negotiations will proceed.

According to Petraeus, any discussions are likely to centre on Iran’s uranium enrichment programme and securing safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, leaving open the question of whether a workable compromise can be reached.
