A 22-year-old auntie faced sentencing in the Whangarei District Court for assaulting her nieces and nephews in an incident involving a hot pie thrown at one child’s face and physical violence towards others.
This episode unfolded against a backdrop of her challenging life, marked by repeated instances of family harm where she was the victim. During her sentencing, Judge Gene Tomlinson uncovered the defendant’s history of being involved in 21 family harm callouts, highlighting a cycle of violence that influenced her actions.
The assault occurred last December when the woman, sitting with her nieces and nephews at the Ōtaika shops in Whangārei, reacted violently after a child cried for some of her pie. The situation escalated to throwing the pie at the child’s face, punching, and slapping the children and swearing at them.
The judge’s inquiry into her past revealed a woman shaped by her environment, having endured a tumultuous upbringing and the burden of caring for a multitude of young relatives. Recognising this complex interplay of her experiences and her actions, Judge Tomlinson sentenced her to 12 months of intensive supervision, focusing on anger management.
