Police officer sentenced for unlawful arrest, pepper spray and taser assault after patrol car crash

Morne de Lange news

Auckland police officer Morne de Lange has been convicted and sentenced to 100 hours of community work after an unlawful arrest incident where he crashed into a motorcyclist at a petrol station, pursued the man in a bystander’s vehicle, and used pepper spray and a Taser, including while the victim was on the ground.

De Lange pleaded guilty to careless driving and assault with a weapon, though the judge discharged him without conviction for the driving offence.

Despite his lawyer’s plea that a conviction might cost him his job, the judge said the misconduct itself was more significant.

De Lange also paid $1000 to the petrol station and was ordered to pay the victim $1000 for emotional harm.

  1. The independent police conduct authority has its own separate court. It has but one single specialist judge called Colin Doherty. He is called the chair.

    Here are some facts.

    * The IPCA only investigates 2 to 3% of complaints.
    * The IPCA is not subject to the official information act.
    * The IPCA he deals with 4500 complaints a year. i.e. that is 19 each working day.
    * Doherty say they are underfunded and do not investigate all complaints.
    * Doherty says being subject to the official information act could compromise the ability to deal with what people tell us.
    * Doherty says he can not bring a prosecution against a policeman.
    * Doherty says whatever police tell us can never be used against police. WTF is that crap? Oh. I murdered someone, can’t use that against that cop.

A totally dysfunctional, useless ordination legislated to ignore any criminal activity police commit.
