Police and Auckland Council are investigating after a mother reported witnessing a park worker at Shakespear Regional Park striking and injuring pūkeko with a mallet, allegedly breaking their legs and leaving them to suffer in public view.

A complaint was lodged with the council, which confirmed the staff member involved has been reassigned while inquiries continue.

Council officials stressed the actions do not reflect their “wildlife management practices”, adding that pūkeko are a valued native species in the pest-free sanctuary. Police confirmed they are pursuing the complaint, with inquiries ongoing.

  2. What the hell is wrong with some people? Yeah arrest and charge them, without delay. I hope the animals in question were helped.

  3. The SPCA should be granted the power to detain and / or arrest, and bring forth charges against animal cruelty in the Courts.
That would free-up police time, but then again…would the cops be going after families camping in the bush in their attempts to escape the aspects of the Matrix which is threatening CBDC, Digital ID’s and phone / bit tracking devices??

  4. I do remember a targeted propagander campaign against pūkeko contradicting their native status and demonising them by killing and eating baby Ducklings. I have even heard dumb people parroting this, they probably shoot adult Ducks themselves! I don’t expect animal cruelty ever going away especially while Eco schools exist and schools in general receiving visits from DoC and local groups pushing their venom-is hatred for anything that was introduced. They always keep quiet about how thousands of hectares of natural habitat was wiped out ant housing and infrastructure keeps up it’s steady march forcing out native species. Bird strikes on truck window screens alone must devastate numbers so multiply that on how many trucks are on the roads each day.
