Police have confirmed the recovery operation at the Mount Maunganui landslide has resumed this morning after specialist monitoring equipment was installed overnight and loose material above the slip area was removed.

The search was evacuated late yesterday morning after potential instability was identified, but Bay of Plenty District Commander Superintendent Tim Anderson said recovery teams were able to return to work from 10.30am following safety checks and ongoing monitoring of the hillside.

Meanwhile, WorkSafe says it is in the early stages of preparing a review into whether organisations with a duty of care at the holiday park were meeting their health and safety obligations.

A spokesperson told media inspectors are being assembled and will work closely with Police once the search and recovery phase is complete, stressing that the immediate priority remains the safe return of loved ones to their families.

  1. …..organisations with a duty of care
You don’t mean the $ 165.000 p/a counsellors who are responsible for de-foresting a hillside?
BTW: given the morphology of the terrain, the slip site was an old slip site before. Thats why there were trees. Trees don’t grow on unscathed paddocks.

  2. the old macs a fair way from the slip, can that affect the hill further around (geologists rabbit-hole entry needed)
previous photos (apart from the obvious curved and slumped-in existence of the hot-springs hillside being
dodgy-as-f*ck with huge/small slips visible colapsed recently and previous years as well. Anyone ever seen steam up there?
You don’t f*ck with monster downpours. historic dead-in-line six planet alignment and seething volcanic activity all with mega-sunbursts just being co-incidence right ?

  3. the sickening virtue-signalling wokeness of the snitchy oily council snakes
