Strong support for New Zealand minerals strategy – Jones

NZ minerals news

Over 90 percent of submissions have expressed broad support for a new minerals strategy in New Zealand, demonstrating widespread approval for a long-term approach to the development of the country’s mineral resources, according to Resources Minister Shane Jones.

A summary of 102 submissions on the draft strategy, released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, reveals that 96 percent of respondents back the government’s plan for managing the future of mining in New Zealand.

Jones stated that the Minerals Strategy represents the Coalition Government’s vision for a sustainable and prosperous minerals sector, which has historically lacked clear direction.

The strategy aims to double the value of New Zealand’s mineral exports to $2 billion by 2035, while ensuring responsible development that supports regional growth, self-sufficiency, and the transition to clean energy. Submitters have largely endorsed the strategy, offering suggestions on balancing environmental concerns and promoting innovation and research within the sector.

Jones said the feedback had been important, noting that it will be considered before the strategy is finalised later this year. He thanked all those who contributed to the consultation, acknowledging their role in shaping a future-focused and responsible minerals sector for New Zealand.
