Thai–Cambodian border clashes erupt as both sides trade accusations

Fresh fighting has broken out along the Thai-Cambodian border, with both countries accusing each other of shattering a US-brokered ceasefire that halted deadly clashes in July.

Thailand said the violence reignited on Sunday when Cambodian forces allegedly opened fire on Thai soldiers in Ubon Ratchathani province, killing one and injuring four, followed by drone and artillery strikes on Anupong Base.

In response, the Royal Thai Air Force deployed F-16 jets on Monday, saying the strikes were aimed at neutralising Cambodian military capabilities to protect civilians.

Cambodia rejected the claim, insisting Thai troops launched multiple assaults using small arms, mortars and tanks, while accusing Bangkok of fabricating allegations and inflating reports of troop buildups.

The long-running border dispute, rooted in colonial-era French maps, has repeatedly sparked conflict, with July’s flare-up leaving dozens dead and displacing more than 200,000 people.
