Trump condemns ‘pure evil’ attack in New Orleans, blames ‘fake news media’ and Democrats

US President-elect Donald Trump has strongly condemned the devastating New Year’s attack in New Orleans, in which a driver killed ten people and injured dozens by plowing a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street.

Authorities identified the suspect as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar of Texas, who was killed in a shootout with police after the rampage.

In a statement, Trump called the incident an act of “pure evil” and pledged his administration’s full support to the city in investigating the tragedy and ensuring justice for the victims.

“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true. The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before,” Trump said.

“Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!”

The attack occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. in the French Quarter, a popular tourist destination, during New Year celebrations. Witnesses described a scene of horror as the suspect’s truck tore through the crowd. Authorities confirmed that the attacker exited the vehicle and opened fire on responding officers before being neutralised.

The FBI is investigating the incident as a terrorist attack, citing the discovery of an ISIS flag and multiple explosive devices in the suspect’s vehicle and nearby areas. Attorney General Merrick Garland affirmed that all federal resources, including the FBI, ATF, and the Justice Department, are being deployed to uncover the suspect’s motives and any potential affiliations with terrorist organisations.

President Biden also issued a statement, expressing his condolences to the victims and their families while emphasising the need for unity in the face of such violence. “There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation’s communities,” Biden said.

The incident has prompted criticism of New Orleans’ security measures, with former FBI Special Agent Chris Swecker questioning on Fox News how a vehicle was able to breach the perimeter. The city’s mayor confirmed that vehicle barriers on Bourbon Street were in the process of being replaced at the time of the attack.

  1. Shamsud-Din Jabbar sounds like an old Texas name. Merrick Garland directing the FBI to investigate Jabbar will make a welcome change from investigating more Russian Collusion leading up to the inauguration.
