TVNZ has warned that a defeat in Talley’s Group’s defamation case could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s media, including bloggers and independent writers.
The state broadcaster argued in the High Court that its reporting on Talley’s health and safety practices met responsible journalism standards and that curtailing such protections would chill investigative reporting nationwide. #
Talley’s sued over six stories aired in 2021–22 by reporter Thomas Mead, claiming reputational and financial damage.
According to a report in legacy media (paywalled) TVNZ’s lawyer, Davey Salmon KC, said the case mirrors tactics by wealthy plaintiffs overseas to intimidate journalists, stressing that success for Talley’s would endanger press freedom and responsible reporting in New Zealand.
Press freedom…….like the PIJF gifted by Ardern et al with strict guidelines on several ideological narratives?
Journalist’s mainly in NZ have sold themselves for tuppence. All credibility eroded.
TVNZ s audience will be dead un 10-15 of old age so they better sort themselves quick. Having said that I don’t think there’s much hope for them. Truth and govt funded media went out the window years ago.
The MSM banged on incessantly about disinformation, especially during the so called pandemic. Now they are being taken to task legally, with the outcome as yet undecided as yet, its all sad faces, tea and sympathy. Well, not from me.
Being able to lie as much as you want with no accountability = “press freedom”.
The problem TVNZ has is they lost all credibility during the covid rollout. No TVs in this house. No chance of getting one either. If tvnz goes it wont matter to me.
When we move next we won’t be having any TVs in the house. We still have 3 stuck to the walls here. Not sure they go any more as haven’t turned them in since May 2020, ypu can thank Jacinda for the rapid decline in trust and feelings of animosity towards any traditional media. They have certainly list me for good.
TVNZ’s audience has shrunk to a point where it wouldn’t matter if they disappear altogether. They did it to themselves.

Where was this responsible reporting during covid instead what we got was a pile on those that refused the vac. Then there’s the science is settled nonsense for man made global warming. Science is never settled ever
