Living standards in the United Kingdom are forecast to continue falling behind comparable economies as weak growth and persistent inflation take their toll, according to a new report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research.
Its latest World Economic League Table predicts the UK will drop from 19th to 22nd globally in GDP per capita rankings by 2030, overtaken by economies including Hong Kong, Finland and the UAE, with living standards expected to slip below Malta’s by 2035.
UK GDP per capita is forecast at about US$58,775 next year, while growth over the next five years is projected to be the second weakest in the G7, ahead of only Japan.
CEBR warned Britain faces a “triple challenge” of high inflation, high debt and low growth, alongside rising tax burdens, weak competitiveness and state spending pressures, leaving households still poorer than before the Covid-19 pandemic.
