Woman in McSkimming scandal urges deeper inquiry as police culture faces crisis

Jevon McSkimming scandal triggers call for inquiry in police culture

The woman known as Ms Z, whose allegations triggered the downfall of former Deputy Police Commissioner Jevon McSkimming, is calling for a wider inquiry into police culture after a damning IPCA report found senior officers failed for years to investigate her claims.

Ms Z sent hundreds of anonymous emails alleging grooming and sexual predation, but instead of probing her complaints, police prosecuted her under the Harmful Digital Communications Act and silenced her with strict suppression orders while protecting McSkimming, then a frontrunner for Commissioner.

The IPCA’s scathing findings have since forced resignations, investigations and apologies from senior leaders, with the government pledging reforms including an Inspector-General. Although a fresh criminal investigation later found insufficient evidence to charge McSkimming over her allegations, he resigned after detectives discovered thousands of pornographic images – including extreme objectionable material – on his police-issued devices. He has since pleaded guilty to possession charges.

Ms Z, whose own prosecution has now been dropped, told legacy media the episode has devastated her life and exposed deeper cultural failings that require a more powerful inquiry, but ministers say the IPCA review is enough despite the scandal being one of the most damaging to police in decades.

  1. Of course the inquiry should go deeper and of course those in close vicinity to the accused and those whom are guilty of…..? But have dodged being exposed this time will advocate for this IPCA inquiry to be enough. Police are paid by the people of NZ, the actions of some Police in their position of trust have severely affected some of the people of NZ. I call for a thorough and deeper investigation

  2. Those who have faced false prosecution know all to well how police change evidence, how documents statements are altered, go missing.

It is long past time the police complaints authority and its single judge are dismissed. They are inadequate. That system is not justice. Recommendations is not justice. Recommendations is a joke on the public.

No trust exists between the police and the public anymore. No trust exists between government and the people. That is not the fault of the people. It is the fault of the police . It is a fault of government by taking a soft touch to the biggest gang. The New Zealand Police.

      • Agreed Tom, but it was the Crown Prosecutor who persecuted Ms Z into silence.

This was the Crown protecting those who protect them.

This goes waaay above and beyond Police culture and is outside IPCA scope. It details collusion between the Crown and Police that seeks to install morally corrupt and compromised individuals at the highest levels who will do their bidding on threat of exposure.

It really questions what’s going on at the highest levels at the Crown.

    • Maybe the machinations of/between police and the courts are open to IPCA scrutiny, but there is an even bigger and darker entity that operates in total secrecy, away from any public scrutiny: the Family Court system, eligible to be called Mafia.
Colossal injustice and insane time delays wreck havoc on Godzone’s children.

  3. This is why anything to do with public servants needs to be public. None of these behind closed doors shenanigans both Labour and National, have trotted out, when it suits them. Every one of them, from the PM down are “public servants”, not a private organisation that operates in the public space. If they can’t accept this, then don’t run for office and don’t ask the people of New Zealand, to pay you a salary. Time democracy was fixed, because as of right now, its well and truly BROKEN.

  4. What about the muslim Officer that will not accept Destiny Church approval to march across the Auckland Harbour Bridge! All paperwork and requirements have been covered. However, The TPM march was allowed and the Pro-palestine. Yet New Zealanders and Christians are not allowed.
