Denmark’s Clara Tauson claimed the ASB Classic women’s singles title in dramatic fashion after former world number one Naomi Osaka withdrew due to a midsection muscle strain while leading by a set.
Tauson, who had battled through a tumultuous tournament that included a two-day semi-final and surviving a match point in earlier rounds, found herself unexpectedly crowned champion without winning a set in the final.
Osaka had taken the first set 6-4 with powerful serves and precise forehands, but her injury cut short what could have been a triumphant return following her 2023 maternity leave.
Tauson, securing her first WTA title since 2021, expressed mixed emotions over the unexpected victory. Both players now turn their focus to the Australian Open next week.
Due to injury, Osaka has retired from the match. Clara Tauson is the champion with a final score of 4-6.
