The Horowhenua Kāpiti Rugby Football Union has postponed all club, college, and junior rugby games scheduled for 28 June, citing ongoing abuse and threats against referees.
The decision follows a recent incident in which a referee at a college match was subjected to serious verbal abuse and physical intimidation, prompting concerned spectators to escort him to his vehicle for safety.
The union had previously warned in May that games could be canceled after referees reported being threatened, physically abused, and even struck with equipment.
Union leaders say the pause is meant to prompt reflection on the culture of the sport, urging players, supporters, and parents to uphold rugby’s values and ensure a respectful, safe environment for officials.
