Star wide receiver for the New England Patriots Stefon Diggs is facing a felony strangulation charge along with a lesser assault charge over an alleged incident on 2 December, allegations he strongly denies.
His lawyer says the claims are unsubstantiated and stem from an unresolved financial dispute with a woman reported to be his former chef, a claim first detailed by the Boston Globe.
The Patriots say they are aware of the accusations, support Diggs’ denial, and are cooperating with authorities and the NFL as the legal process continues.
Diggs, who signed a three-year, US$69 million deal earlier this year, is due to be arraigned in a Massachusetts court on 23 January and recently welcomed a baby with his partner, Cardi B.
