The San Francisco 49ers mounted a remarkable comeback to defeat the Detroit Lions, setting up a Super Bowl rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas.
The Chiefs, having won last year’s Super Bowl, secured their spot by beating the Baltimore Ravens, making it their fourth appearance in the NFL’s championship game in five years.
The Lions, who have never played in a Super Bowl, led 24-7 at halftime. However, the 49ers rallied with 17 points in eight minutes, eventually taking the lead and winning 34-31. The victory sets up a repeat of Super Bowl 54, where the Chiefs defeated the 49ers.
San Francisco has been favoured to win Super Bowl 58 since late November, boasting a star-studded roster. Both teams faced tough challenges in the playoffs. The 49ers came from behind to win against Green Bay and Detroit, while the Chiefs, usually hosting playoff games, won on the road against Buffalo and top-seeded Baltimore.
Detroit’s coach Dan Campbell has significantly improved the team’s performance, with more playoff wins this month than in the entire Super Bowl era since 1966.
