The New Zealand Warriors delivered a commanding 36-12 victory over the Melbourne Storm in their preseason challenge match in Hamilton on Saturday, giving fans a glimpse of a new era led by playmaker Luke Metcalf.
With several first-choice players on the field, the Warriors surged to a 36-0 halftime lead, with Metcalf orchestrating the attack by setting up two tries, kicking four goals, and launching a 40/20 before being rested for the second half.
Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Taine Tuaupiki both crossed for first-half doubles, while the Warriors’ forward pack dominated a Storm side missing most of its expected Round 1 starters.
Melbourne managed two late tries in a more competitive second half but never threatened the result.
Coach Andrew Webster trialed different combinations, with Metcalf and Te Maire Martin expected to lead the halves in Las Vegas.
Meanwhile, young gun Ali Leiataua impressed with two tries and five tackle busts, further solidifying his spot in the team. Despite a quiet start, Storm recruit Stefano Utoikamanu showed promise in his second stint, finishing with 110 metres.
The Warriors’ strong showing signals a promising start to the post-Shaun Johnson era.
