TikTok will remain accessible in the U.S. for at least three more months, as President Donald Trump plans to issue a third deadline extension on a mandated sale or ban, defying a law passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump will sign a new Executive Order this week to keep the platform running while a deal for U.S. ownership is finalised. The Chinese-owned app, with 170 million American users, has been at the centre of national security concerns, but Trump—who credited TikTok with helping him win the youth vote in 2024—has softened his stance.
The move contrasts with Joe Biden’s earlier enforcement of the ban law, and raises questions about whether TikTok will ever actually be removed.
TikTok, buoyed by Trump’s support, has continued to expand, launching new AI tools at Cannes this week. Several high-profile investor groups, including Oracle and personalities like MrBeast, remain interested in acquiring the platform, but a final agreement is still pending Chinese regulatory approval.
