New York’s LaGuardia Airport has been closed indefinitely following a collision between an Air Canada Express aircraft and a ground vehicle, prompting authorities to halt all operations.
The Federal Aviation Administration imposed a ground stop late Sunday night, warning there is a strong chance the shutdown could remain in place as investigations continue.
According to reports, the aircraft had just arrived from Montreal and had touched down safely before slowing on the runway. It was travelling at roughly 24mph when it struck a vehicle operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the airport.
The aircraft, identified as a CRJ 900 carrying an estimated 70 to 90 passengers, sustained heavy damage in the incident. Emergency services responded to the scene, with local media indicating multiple people were injured.
Footage circulating online shows the plane stationary on the runway with its nose tilted upward following the impact. Authorities are now working to determine how the collision occurred.
PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE NOSE OF THE PLANE ⚠️
