Swiss authorities say a catastrophic New Year’s Day fire at a crowded bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana, which killed 40 people and injured 119 others, was most likely sparked by sparklers attached to champagne bottles that were raised too close to the ceiling, igniting a blaze that spread rapidly.

Prosecutors are examining the bar’s fire safety measures, building materials, capacity limits and crowd size to determine whether criminal charges may follow, according to British state media.

Many of the injured remain in critical condition, with dozens transferred to specialist burn units across Europe, while forensic teams continue the painstaking process of formally identifying victims.

Families are still awaiting news of missing loved ones as investigators work through disaster victim identification procedures to confirm the identities of those killed.
