Former Biden aide Tara Reade says Russian citizenship is an “honour and a privilege”.
Former US Senate staffer and political commentator Tara Reade has been granted Russian citizenship after years of controversy and personal upheaval.
Reade, who worked as an aide to Joe Biden in the early 1990s, received her Russian passport during a ceremony in Moscow on Saturday. Speaking to RT afterward, she said the moment carried significant emotional weight.
“It was quite a beautiful ceremony, and I feel so lucky,” Reade said. “It’s such an honour and a privilege.”
Reade publicly accused Biden in 2020 of sexually assaulting her during her time working in his Senate office, allegations the former US president has denied. In 2023, she relocated to Russia, saying she feared for her safety in the United States after restating the claims during Biden’s re-election campaign.
Her Russian citizenship was approved in September by President Vladimir Putin.
Asked what Russia offered that she felt was lacking in the US, Reade pointed to what she described as a stronger sense of responsibility among political leaders.
“President Putin loves his country and is very devoted to the Russian people,” she said. “In the US, the politicians don’t have that same care for the people, for the Americans.”
Reade also praised Russia’s economic resilience, saying, “People are very happy. You have a thriving middle class. You have a thriving economy, even under all these sanctions. It’s amazing.”
She stressed that her comments were not intended as an attack on her home country, noting that she had served the United States during her years in politics.
“I’m not trying to trash America,” she said.
Now a contributor to RT, Reade suggested she hopes to play a constructive role in easing tensions between Washington and Moscow.
“I think I can be a bridge between America and Russia,” she said, adding that she wants to help counter what she described as anti-Russian narratives in Western legacy mainstream media.
President Putin recognises those with integrity and honesty, which is exactly the opposite in the U.S..
