Lost for five years, California dog reunited with owner after being found across the U.S.

Nearly five years after her rescue dog Choco vanished, Sacramento woman Patricia Orozco has been reunited with him following an extraordinary discovery more than 3,700 kilometres away in Michigan.

Orozco never stopped thinking about the wirehaired Dachshund mix, who disappeared in 2021, and was stunned when a microchip alert revealed he had been found tied outside an animal shelter in Lincoln, Michigan.

With young children at home and limited options to retrieve him, Orozco turned to social media, sparking a community effort involving animal welfare volunteers, donated airline miles and coordinated transport. Volunteer Penny Scott flew cross-country to collect Choco and escort him home, navigating long delays and multiple airports.

The 11-year-old dog arrived safely back in Sacramento on December 3, where he was reunited with his owner at the same home he once lived in. Though slower with age, Choco’s affectionate personality remains intact, and Orozco described the reunion as nothing short of a Christmas miracle, crediting microchipping and community support for bringing her dog home.
