Israel has launched its first air strike in months on Beirut’s southern suburbs, hitting an apartment building in the Dahieh district and targeting what it says was Hezbollah’s chief of staff, identified by Israeli media as Ali Tabtai.
The attack, which killed at least five people and injured 28, comes despite a US- and French-brokered ceasefire and amid Israeli claims that Hezbollah is rebuilding its military capabilities, smuggling weapons, and increasing drone production.
Lebanon’s president has condemned the strike as a violation of the post-conflict agreement and urged international pressure on Israel, while Hezbollah confirmed only that a senior commander was targeted.
The flare-up follows escalating tensions since Hezbollah began firing rockets after the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack, with thousands killed in Lebanon and more than a hundred deaths reported in Israel.
