French politicians have condemned the theft of crown jewels from the Louvre Museum as a “humiliation” for the nation after a group of masked intruders carried out a swift, professional robbery on Sunday morning.
The thieves reportedly used a truck-mounted basket lift to reach a window on the museum’s façade around 9:30 a.m., broke into the Apollon Gallery, and fled on motorbikes within minutes. One damaged piece, believed to be the crown of Empress Eugénie, was found discarded outside the museum.
Officials described the operation as “highly organised,” noting that the stolen items hold “inestimable heritage value.” Police are examining CCTV footage, the lift equipment used in the break-in, and interviewing museum staff as part of the investigation.
The Apollon Gallery houses France’s remaining crown jewels, including treasures linked to Napoleon’s family and the Second Empire. The daring heist has sparked widespread outrage and renewed debate about museum security and the protection of France’s cultural heritage.
