Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has warned that an illegal attempt to seize power is under way, following weeks of growing protests over power cuts, corruption, and rising living costs.
His statement came after the CAPSAT army unit—instrumental in Rajoelina’s own rise to power during the 2009 crisis—criticised the government’s heavy-handed response to demonstrations in the capital, Antananarivo.
Rajoelina condemned the move as an effort to destabilise the country and urged national unity to defend the constitutional order and sovereignty.
