Mexican authorities have arrested seven bodyguards over their alleged failure to stop the gunman who murdered Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo, an outspoken critic of cartel violence, during a Day of the Dead ceremony on 1 November.
Manzo, 40, was shot seven times at the public event, prompting panic and later mass protests questioning why his security detail did not intervene. The arrests follow the capture of a man identified as the suspected mastermind, believed to have ties to the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which officials say targeted Manzo for his public stance against extortion and cartel influence over avocado growers.
Both state and federal agents detained the guards near the scene of the killing, as investigations continue into the broader criminal network behind the assassination.
