Starmer orders National Inquiry into grooming gangs after months of pressure and backlash

UK grooming gang inquiry news

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a full statutory inquiry into the UK grooming gangs scandal, following mounting pressure and a recommendation from Baroness Casey of Blackstock.

The inquiry will have legal powers to compel witness testimony and will coordinate with ongoing local investigations.

It follows years of public concern, media scrutiny, and allegations of systemic failures by authorities to act on evidence of widespread sexual abuse—particularly involving Pakistani-heritage men and white female victims.

The review will also examine claims of a cover-up by officials who feared addressing the racial dynamics of the crimes would incite social unrest.

Starmer had previously resisted calls for a national inquiry, but reversed his stance after reviewing Casey’s audit, saying it was the “right thing to do.”

His delay has drawn sharp criticism from Conservative figures, including Kemi Badenoch and Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, who accused him of political cowardice and smearing those who had earlier called for action.

The inquiry is expected to probe institutional failings, including issues tied to taxi licensing and public office misconduct. Critics and survivors are calling for swift proceedings, warning that delayed justice would further betray the victims.

    • Yes yes of course. Government sets down objectives and questions gather a bunch of people who have no more power than a sunday school committee. They can ask this question but not that question. Them make recommendations. From start to finish it could take 2 years.

      Yes Minister.
