Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, broke his silence with a defiant outburst as he was escorted into a Pennsylvania courthouse.
“It’s completely out of touch, and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and its lived experience,” Mangione shouted, prompting officers to rush him inside.
Appearing unfazed in an orange jumpsuit, he whispered to his attorney, Thomas Dickey, glanced at reporters, and mumbled to himself during the Blair County Court hearing.
Prosecutors revealed that Mangione was carrying $8,000 in U.S. cash, foreign currency, masks, a passport, and a “ghost gun” with a silencer resembling the weapon used in Thompson’s December 4th shooting when apprehended in Altoona. Dickey argued the masks were merely for COVID precautions. Mangione, denied bail, will remain incarcerated until his legal team files a habeas corpus writ to contest his detention.
The arrest followed a nationwide five-day manhunt involving the FBI and multiple state police departments.
Mangione, recognised at a local McDonald’s, was apprehended with a manifesto allegedly outlining grievances against the healthcare industry. He faces charges of second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, possession of a forged instrument, and additional firearm-related offenses in New York.
Blair County prosecutors stated that New York’s charges take precedence, with extradition proceedings expected to begin shortly.
