Sydney protest over Israeli president’s visit turns violent

Violent clashes occurred during a protest in Sydney’s CBD against Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit, with police arresting 27 people, including 10 for assaulting officers.

About 6,000 people gathered at Town Hall before some attempted to march toward NSW Parliament despite legal restrictions under the Public Assembly Restriction Declaration and Major Events Act.

Police said officers were threatened and assaulted during multiple confrontations and used tactics including dispersal lines and pepper spray. Meanwhile protesters blamed police for escalating tensions.

NSW Police and the NSW Premier defended the response as necessary for public safety, while some protesters, organisers, and Greens MPs alleged excessive force and called for an investigation. Body-worn police footage will be reviewed, and no serious injuries to officers were reported, though paramedics treated several protesters.
