At least one person was killed and 11 others injured after a gunman opened fire in Midland, Texas, on Friday, prompting a major police response and a lengthy standoff that ended with the suspect’s death.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong told a media briefing that authorities had identified 11 victims and confirmed that one person had died at the scene. Police later confirmed the gunman was also dead.
According to the Midland Police Department, officers were called to reports of an active shooter in the southwest area of the city on Friday morning. Upon arrival, officers heard gunfire coming from a building and moved quickly to secure the area, deploying armoured vehicles and receiving assistance from partner agencies.
Midland Police Chief Greg Snow said officers attempted to resolve the situation safely while managing a standoff with the shooter. The department later announced the incident had ended and the suspect was confirmed deceased.
Footage circulating on social media appeared to show police officers taking cover behind a patrol vehicle while one officer returned fire with a rifle.

Nine of the injured victims were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital. According to hospital officials, four patients were undergoing surgery while five others were reported to be in stable condition. Authorities have not yet released further details about the victims or the motive behind the attack.
