U.S. announces new sanctions on Russian oil giants

The United States has announced a new round of sanctions against Russia, targeting two of its largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, along with 34 of their subsidiaries operating in the energy sector.

The Treasury Department said the measures respond to Moscow’s “lack of serious commitment to a peace process,” as tensions persist over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that Washington is prepared to take further steps if necessary, urging allies to support President Donald Trump’s efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire. The move follows reports that the European Union is also preparing fresh sanctions on Russia and several companies in China and India accused of helping Moscow bypass existing restrictions.

Despite Trump’s growing frustration with both Russia and Ukraine, the White House has so far avoided a broader escalation, with the president insisting that diplomacy remains the preferred path. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to meet in Hungary to discuss potential progress toward a negotiated settlement, though the timing of the summit has not been confirmed.
