Man gets Home Detention for aiding illegal prostitution

Michael Sloan news

Michael James Sloan has been sentenced to 10 months of home detention in the Auckland District Court for aiding Brazilian immigrant women to work illegally as prostitutes in New Zealand.

Sloan pleaded guilty to charges related to assisting international sex workers in operating against the conditions of their temporary visas, following an investigation by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) triggered by anonymous tips.

The Prostitution Reform Act 2003 prohibits migrants on temporary visas from engaging in the sex industry in New Zealand.

Sloan and a co-defendant, who is yet to be sentenced, acted as booking agents for 15 Brazilian women, arranging advertising and managing customer service and bookings.

Their operations were based out of motels in the central North Island. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) highlighted the breach of visa conditions but noted no indication of work exploitation among the women, who were in New Zealand on visas typically used for tourism, family visits, or short-term work or study.

The women involved have been deported.
