Kansas City Chiefs go back-to-back after beating San Francisco 49ers in overtime at Super Bowl 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs secured their third Super Bowl victory in five years by overcoming the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in a thrilling overtime finish.

Despite the 49ers entering the game as favourites and leading at several points, including a 10-3 advantage at halftime, the Chiefs managed a last-minute comeback to tie the game at 19-19, pushing it into overtime.

Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes played a pivotal role, especially with a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman that sealed the win, marking Kansas City as the NFL’s latest dynasty with back-to-back titles, a feat last achieved by the New England Patriots in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Mahomes, at 28, has joined an elite group of quarterbacks with three or more Super Bowl wins, while Coach Andy Reid has solidified his legacy with his third championship. The game, notable for its defensive battles and strategic plays, was a rematch of sorts from the 2020 Super Bowl, where the Chiefs had also mounted a comeback against the 49ers.

This Super Bowl, the first held in Las Vegas, drew a large ‘celebrity’ presence, including a surprise appearance by Prince Harry and widespread interest due to the relationship between Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce and pop star Taylor Swift.

Mahomes capped a great night for himself by being named the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player for the third time.
