Greens push forward with Tana party-hopping meeting despite appeal

Darlene Tana news

Former Green MP Darleen Tana is appealing a High Court decision that allows the Green Party to hold a special meeting to decide her removal from Parliament under the party-hopping legislation.

Tana, now an independent MP, had earlier obtained an injunction to stop the meeting, but the court ruled against her, clearing the way for the Green Party to proceed. Despite Tana’s last-minute appeal, Green co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick confirmed that the meeting would go ahead as planned on 17 October.

The meeting will see Green Party delegates vote on whether to use the party-hopping law to remove Tana from Parliament, with a 75 percent threshold needed for the co-leaders to request her removal.

Tana was ousted from the party following an investigation that found she likely knew about worker exploitation allegations against her husband’s business and failed to disclose them.

The Greens, although historically hesitant to use the party-hopping law, believe Tana’s continued presence disrupts the party’s proportionality in Parliament.
