New Plymouth man Matheson Brown has set a new world record for climbing the highest peak in every US state, completing the grueling feat in 20 days, 14 hours, and 4 minutes.
Starting with Denali in Alaska and finishing at Mount Rainier in Washington, Brown achieved this incredible milestone with the support of his father and two friends.
Despite a shoestring budget and no professional backing, he tackled the challenge with minimal sleep, often running up peaks and navigating the logistical nightmare of driving between widely dispersed mountains. Brown’s achievement demonstrates that determination and resourcefulness can triumph over the absence of lavish resources, a key distinction from the previous record-holder, who relied on a private jet.
Brown meticulously planned his journey, mapping routes on cardboard and using Google Maps to minimise driving time. However, the layout of US peaks, particularly Maine’s isolated location, forced time-consuming detours.
Fatigue was a constant companion, with hallucinations and near-falls from exhaustion during his relentless pace. Each climb brought unique challenges, from freezing Alpine ice to unexpectedly favourable conditions. Self-funded and driven by a desire to inspire others, Brown proved that ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary feats. Looking ahead, he is open to sponsorships for future adventures to train and compete at an even higher level.
“Brown proved that ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary feats”.
Making him extraordinary. A ‘Remarkable’ achievement.
