A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, on Tuesday, causing widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure.
The quake, which occurred at a depth of 57.1km according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), triggered a brief tsunami alert that was later lifted.
Initial reports indicate significant destruction, with at least one death confirmed and multiple injuries.
Journalist Dan McGarry described the quake to UK state media as the most severe in over two decades, citing collapsed buildings, damaged vehicles, and widespread chaos.
Footage on social media shows debris-strewn streets, fallen structures, and homes with upturned furniture. Authorities reported at least four aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 4.7 to 5.5, within hours of the initial tremor.
The earthquake caused considerable damage to key diplomatic buildings, including the New Zealand High Commission in Port Vila.
The facility, which also houses the embassies of the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, sustained structural damage.
Approximately 45 New Zealanders are registered as being in Vanuatu, though officials believe the actual number is higher.
The US embassy in Port Vila also reported extensive damage and will remain closed until further notice.
