Sean Dyche has been dismissed as Everton manager after less than two years in charge, with the announcement made just hours before Everton’s FA Cup match against Peterborough.
The club’s under-18s coach, Leighton Baines, and captain Seamus Coleman will oversee the match.
Dyche’s departure follows a dismal run, with Everton sitting 16th in the Premier League and just one point above the relegation zone after a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth.
Dyche’s exit was preceded by discussions with the Friedkin Group, Everton’s new owners, who reportedly felt it was time for a change. The departure also included four members of Dyche’s coaching team, with difficult negotiations preceding a settlement.
Despite the defensive strength shown this season with seven clean sheets, Everton’s inability to score—netting only 15 league goals—has been a significant concern.
The Friedkin Group is reportedly seeking a replacement with Premier League experience, with David Moyes’ name in the mix.
Jose Mourinho has been ruled out as a contender. Dyche, who joined Everton in January 2023 and secured the club’s survival that season, managed to lead them to a 15th-place finish in 2023-24 despite an eight-point deduction for financial breaches.
This season, however, Everton’s offensive struggles have deepened their troubles. Dyche’s departure makes him the sixth Premier League manager to be sacked this season, following Julen Lopetegui’s dismissal by West Ham a day earlier. Everton’s next chapter looms large as they prepare to bid farewell to Goodison Park for a new era at Bramley-Moore Dock.
