Pete Hegseth’s four-hour Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday was a political showdown marked by partisan divides, passionate outbursts, and steadfast resilience from the Secretary of Defense nominee.
Hegseth, known for his outspoken style and veteran advocacy, faced a barrage of questions from Democratic senators, who attacked his perceived lack of traditional credentials and ties to Trump’s administration. Yet, the nominee emerged unscathed, impressing allies and disarming critics with his composed demeanour and compelling vision for the Department of Defense.
The hearing began with drama as protesters interrupted Hegseth’s opening remarks, shouting accusations related to his military record and personal beliefs before being forcibly removed by security.
Hegseth then delivered a powerful statement outlining his “peace through strength” doctrine, emphasizing that military excellence should be rooted in readiness, merit, and apolitical service.
“We are not Republicans. We are not Democrats. We are American warriors,” Hegseth declared.
He underscored the need for rigorous standards across the armed forces, rejecting equity-based initiatives in favour of performance-based assessments.
His speech resonated with supporters, who praised his direct approach. Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer applauded Hegseth’s focus, tweeting, “It is refreshing to hear someone prioritize warriors and lethality without indulging in bureaucratic doublespeak.”
Republican senators rallied around Hegseth, with Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) highlighting the urgency of his confirmation. “We need his leadership at the Pentagon immediately,” Banks stated. Ned Ryun, President of American Majority, echoed this sentiment, praising Hegseth’s ability to navigate hostile questions with “grace and clarity.”
However, Democratic senators voiced concerns about Hegseth’s qualifications and impartiality. Senator Elizabeth Warren attempted a pointed critique, questioning whether Hegseth would commit to avoiding defense industry roles post-service, but her attack only drew laughter from the room.
“You are quite sure every General who serves should not go directly into the defense industry for 10 years but you’re not willing to make that same pledge?” Warren asked.
“I’m not a General, Senator,” Hegseth pointed out.
The whole room just started laughing at Pocahontas after Hegseth embarrassed her.

Critics also accused Hegseth of promoting divisive rhetoric, with Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) linking his nomination to former President Trump’s controversial leadership. Duckworth questioned how Hegseth’s appointment could uphold high military standards given his close ties to Trump. Nevertheless, Hegseth defended his record of service, highlighting his combat experience and his advocacy for veterans through organisations such as Vets for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America.
“This is not academic for me. This is my life,” Hegseth asserted, recounting personal stories of his deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay.
The hearing’s tone shifted as Hegseth revealed how the legacy media had shaped public narratives against him by omitting positive testimonials from colleagues. “Instead of honest reporting, they allowed a handful of anonymous sources to drive a smear campaign,” Hegseth lamented.
The overall consensus from Republicans was clear: Hegseth’s vision and experience make him an ideal candidate for the role. “This hearing showed that Hegseth is dedicated not just to veterans in words, but in deeds,” Downey noted. As the confirmation process moves forward, Hegseth’s supporters remain confident that he will secure the role of Secretary of Defense.

Pete Hegseth just announced that thousands of troops who were fired over the “experimental” COVID vaccine will be “apologized to and reinstated with pay and rank.”
Absolutely huge news.
These are some of the best troops we’ve ever had with unshakable courage to do what’s right. pic.twitter.com/3hntqFHC73

Question for women: Do you agree with Pete Hegseth that women shouldn’t serve in combat roles if they don’t qualify under the same standards as men?
Hegseth reiterated that he will review and increase the military’s standards if necessary to ensure only the best are on the front… pic.twitter.com/q9NbZYspB2
