$1m deal after sewage overflow hits oyster farms

A $1 million settlement has been reached between Watercare, Aquaculture New Zealand, and the Oyster Industry Association after a sewage overflow from Warkworth’s wastewater system contaminated the Mahurangi River, forcing a month-long harvesting halt and the disposal of tens of thousands of oysters.

The overflow, caused by a power surge and monitoring failure, has renewed calls for systemic fixes to protect the aquaculture industry.

Aquaculture NZ told state-funded media the deal provides immediate relief but vowed to seek full compensation for losses, while Watercare acknowledged the disruption and appointed an external expert to assess the damage.
