An alleged rise in Covid-19 cases in New Zealand is being linked to falling booster coverage, with health bureaucrats reporting “50 hospitalisations” and “19 deaths” involving the virus over a single week.
Public health specialists told state media the country is now in its “ninth Covid wave”, with booster uptake sitting at just 56 percent of those eligible, while significant numbers remain completely unvaccinated, particularly among Māori.
General Practice New Zealand chair Dr Bryan Betty says weakening immunity is allowing new waves to emerge year-round, arguing annual boosters should become routine, especially for older and higher-risk groups, and ideally be given alongside flu shots before winter.
Health authorities say infections and hospital admissions are rising but remain below earlier peaks, with no single variant dominating, while reduced testing means many cases are only being detected once patients reach hospital.
Officials are continuing to track spread through wastewater surveillance, hospital admissions, genomic sequencing and reported cases, while urging vulnerable people to update both flu and Covid vaccinations and stay home when unwell.
