World number one Aryna Sabalenka suffered a stunning French Open collapse after squandering a set and double-break advantage to lose 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 to Russian 25th seed Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals.
Sabalenka appeared in complete control before her game unravelled amid windy conditions, producing 57 unforced errors as Shnaider mounted a remarkable comeback. Playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final, Shnaider capitalised on her opponent’s growing frustration and dominated the deciding set, conceding just 14 points.
The victory sends the 22-year-old into the semi-finals against Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska, while Sabalenka’s hopes of a maiden Roland Garros title ended in dramatic fashion despite entering the tournament as the highest-ranked player remaining in either singles draw.
