A petition opposing the Electronic Road User Charges system has attracted 1,200 signatures submitted through Parliament, along with a related Change.org petition nearing 40,000 signatures.
Collective Action for Energy Security spokeswoman Gabrielle Thompson said she was concerned about the severe risks to privacy, pointing out the scheme would require real-time vehicle tracking using GPS transponders. She also speculated about the likely need for hyperscale data centres to store the location data gathered.
The scheme was likely to expand to include road tolling and automated fines, she said. The petition was presented to Parliament earlier this week, but the Change.org campaign remained open ahead of the proposal’s Select Committee stage. Listen or watch Gabrielle Thompson’s interview on RCR.
