The Pentagon has sharply slammed Netflix for what it called “woke garbage,” following the release of a new series BOOTS about a gay man joining the US Marines.
The show’s premiere coincides with President Donald Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s campaign to purge “woke culture” from the military and reassert traditional standards.
US Department of War spokeswoman Kingsley Wilson said the military does not endorse Netflix’s “ideological agenda,” asserting that its standards remain “elite, uniform, and sex neutral.” Wilson added, “The weight of a rucksack or a human being doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight,” emphasizing the Pentagon’s focus on restoring the “warrior ethos.”
The criticism follows Hegseth’s recent announcement of new “male-level” fitness benchmarks designed to ensure combat readiness. He argued that uniform, high standards are essential for survival in life-and-death situations. Earlier this year, Hegseth dismissed the long-used motto “diversity is our strength” as “the dumbest in military history.”
The remarks come amid a severe recruitment shortfall, with 2023 marking the largest gap since the draft ended in 1973. Republican lawmakers have blamed the shortfall on the Pentagon’s focus on diversity and inclusion, which they claim undermines military preparedness. Netflix has not yet responded to requests for comment.
