55-year-old Giane Patrick Woods blamed his strict religious upbringing for the offending.
Woods was sentenced three years imprisonment in the Christchurch District Court yesterday.
Following a police search in March 2022 in which his electronic devices were seized, Woods was found to have had in his possession around 40,000 objectionable files, as well as recordings of a female acquaintance filmed while she was having a shower in the house the two lived in.
Woods’ lawyer James Rapley KC told the court his client had been a member of the Jehovah’s Witness church in his youth, which had taught him that ‘all things sexual were evil and the work of the devil.’
The sentencing judge noted that not all people with strict religious upbringings went on to criminally offend, but accepted it had made Woods more ‘susceptible’ to offending in ‘this disturbing way.’
