At least 64 people have been killed in a massive police operation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, making it the deadliest raid in the city’s history.
According to state authorities, the joint action involved more than 2,500 military and civil police officers and targeted the Comando Vermelho criminal group to prevent its territorial expansion.

Among the dead are 60 suspected gang members, along with two civil and two military police officers. Officials warned the death toll may rise as the operation continues. At least 81 people have been arrested, and two injured suspects are being treated under police custody.
Videos circulating on social media show heavy gunfire and fires across parts of Rio during the raid. Governor Claudio Castro said the operation had been planned for over a year and was necessary to curb organized crime’s growing influence in the city’s favelas.
