Japan’s high-tech toilets, famed for their luxurious features like heated seats, music players, and bidet functions, are facing an unexpected adversary: toilet paper.
Leading manufacturer Toto has issued a caution against wiping their state-of-the-art seats with toilet paper, warning it can create tiny, invisible scratches on the plastic resin surface, potentially leading to dirt accumulation and discoloration.
The announcement came after social media users complained about damaged seats, sparking a wave of interest in proper cleaning techniques for the high-spec thrones.
Toto isn’t alone in advising against toilet paper for cleaning; experts and lifestyle sites suggest using a soft cloth with water or detergent instead, avoiding harsh abrasives or scrubbers.
Despite exploring more scratch-resistant materials, Toto has no immediate plans to change its signature plastic resin design.
Meanwhile, their flagship Washlet remains a symbol of Japan’s hospitality culture, attracting curious tourists and sparking national pride in the cutting-edge lavatory innovations.
