60-year-old Abel Jaye Wira has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison for manslaughter after his neglected and aggressive dogs fatally attacked Panguru man Neville Thomson in 2022.
The case marks the first time a New Zealand dog owner has been jailed for manslaughter over a dog attack.
Thomson’s grieving children urged stronger accountability and tighter dog-control laws, warning that similar tragedies have since occurred.
The court heard that Wira kept 23 underfed and violent dogs in squalid conditions and ignored repeated signs of danger.
Judge Andrew Becroft condemned Wira’s gross negligence, saying his failure directly caused Thomson’s horrific death.

The have a look at the picture of the dogs in the above story – this idiot Sebastian reckons one of the dogs is a retriever lab cross – if that’s a lab /retriever cross then I must be a supermodel!!!! Clearly the pale dog is part pit bull and the other looks like a wolf for goodness sake. People like this shouldn’t own dogs.
