Golriz Ghahraman resigns from Parliament

Golriz Ghahraman shoplifting news

Green MP Golriz Ghahraman is resigning from Parliament following accusations of shoplifting at two clothing stores.

In a statement Ghaharaman said her actions were ‘out of character’ and were the result of ‘extreme stress’ and ‘unrecognised trauma’. She acknowledged her behaviour fell short of the expectations for elected officials and expressed remorse for letting down many people.

She plans to focus on her recovery and continue contributing ‘positively’ outside of Parliament.

Green Party co-leaders Marama Davidson and James Shaw expressed their support for her decision and wished her well for the future. Ghahraman also said she was grateful to Scotties Boutique for their understanding and requested privacy during her recovery.

The police are investigating an incident that occurred on December 23, but have refused to comment on a second alleged incident.

Full statement of Golriz Ghahraman

It is a great honour to serve as a Member of Parliament. I am proud of my advocacy work on human rights and foreign affairs, and particularly proud of campaigns that resulted in practical improvements to the electoral laws governing donations and overseas voting.

It is clear to me that my mental health is being badly affected by the stresses relating to my work. This has led me to act in ways that are completely out of character. I am not trying to excuse my actions, but I do want to explain them.

People should, rightly, expect the highest standards of behaviour from their elected representatives. I fell short. I’m sorry. It’s not a behaviour I can explain because it’s not rational in any way, and after medical evaluation, I understand I’m not well. The mental health professional I see says my recent behaviour is consistent with recent events giving rise to extreme stress response, and relating to previously unrecognised trauma.

With that in mind, I don’t want to hide behind my mental health problems, and I take full responsibility for my actions which I deeply regret.

I have let down a lot of people and I am very sorry.

The best thing for my mental health is to resign as a Member of Parliament and to focus on my recovery and to find other ways to work for positive change in the world.

I will therefore be resigning from Parliament immediately.

I want to thank the many communities and people who have supported me over the years. I will continue to work with and to advocate for those communities however I can, as best I can.

I also want to especially thank Scotties Boutique for the kindness and empathy they have shown me.

I now ask for people to give me the space and privacy I need to get better. I won’t be commenting further at this time.

  1. Death threats?
Code for please feel sorry for me
    Sympathy card
    Reminds me of Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke
    Nobody believed her story
    Not even the Police
Only the people who voted for Te Pāti Māori

  2. And if she hadn’t been sprung she would have continued to offend. The old “stress of the job” song is wearing a bit thin. It appears to be more like ” I can’t break the law I am the bloody law”.
The first symtoms od insanity include joining the green cult.

  3. Unrecognised trauma indeed! Just another WEF ‘leader’ planted in our government who thought it was above the law. Good riddance.
2024 is shaping up very well so far. Ardern gone and taking Gayford with her. Michael Wood – gone. Nasty old Mallard – gone. With a bit of luck polls will get rid of that little Hipkins as well.

  4. Is it right that this is aired is such a public way, before the police have finished their investigation? If so then perhaps we should do so for all those facing any accusation, before their innocence or guilt being determined? None of us know the circumstances and if as she states she has been suffering mentally, then being tried by the media must be harrowing in itself, without the public piling in as well. She may be a politician, but she is still a human being. Does that not mean she is entitled to the same respect, privacy and support the rest of us would wish to receive?

  5. Using the mental health card is a copout and an insult to genuine sufferers of mental illness. Oh wait, she’s a woman…roll out the sexual violence threat card…hang on, she’s a woman of colour….jeez…there’s a lot of cards being played for someone who hasn’t got a full deck.

  6. Her actions are clearly irrational. Not only have they been the cause of her having to resign her parliamentary job, but would prove to be a major obstacle in her obtaining future work as a lawyer. In fact, her future is totally compromised. The whole saga has been a total disaster for her. It is quite possible that she does have mental health issues. Her actions have been destructive and have mainly harmed herself.
I guess we will have to wait a little longer for the full story to emerge. I am no supporter of Green Party politics and in fact I would never vote for them but it is sad to see another person crash and burn like this. What an unholy mess!
