Government programme draws interest from foreign doctors

Health sector news

A new Government-funded training programme to boost New Zealand’s strained primary care workforce has received 184 expressions of interest from overseas-trained doctors, surpassing the 100 available places, Health Minister Simeon Brown announced.

The two-year programme, launched in March, is designed to help “qualified international” doctors already in the country gain registration and begin working in general practice, particularly in underserved rural areas.

The first 10 doctors will start in Waikato this July, with Health New Zealand working to match others with providers nationwide.

Brown said the initiative taps into “untapped potential” and aims to address bottlenecks in clinical training. He also revealed plans to create clearer pathways for NZREX-qualified doctors to begin practising under limited scopes while awaiting placements, as part of wider efforts to improve healthcare access across the country.
