More than 1,600 police officers were deployed in central London on Saturday as thousands joined activist Tommy Robinson’s ‘Unite the Kingdom’ rally and a simultaneous counter-protest organised by ‘Stand Up To Racism’.
Robinson, urging restraint after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, described the event as a major free-speech gathering.
Meanwhile, counter-protesters denounced what they called a “far-right threat”.
The demonstrations unfolded against renewed scrutiny of the UK’s handling of Pakistani grooming gang scandals, which Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently ordered a nationwide inquiry into after long resisting calls for action.
GB News described the atmosphere as tense but determined, with protesters telling the media outlet they were driven by frustration with government policies, loss of free speech, and fears about immigration. One marcher said he was “fed up with the way the country is going and the lack of freedom of speech,” while another insisted they wanted to see “the flooding of our waters by foreigners” stopped. Others stressed they had integrated into Britain but believed their culture and rights should come first, warning that British identity was being “erased.”
Several demonstrators said they were ashamed to fly the Union Jack, claiming politicians had abandoned ordinary people. Many stressed they were not racist or opposed to immigration outright, but felt current policies were undermining national values. “Enough is enough,” one said, adding that they were tired of Keir Starmer’s leadership. Across the crowd, grievances ranged from border control to cultural pride, with marchers declaring they wanted their voices heard and their rights protected before extending them to newcomers, especially those in the country illegally.
